AVERRHOIDIUM DALYI IN COCHA CASHU: BOTANICAL MEMORY, SCIENTIFIC VOUCHER, AND A RARE SAPINDACEAE SPECIES IN MANU SCIENTIFIC NOTE AND FIELD TESTIMONY ON A LITTLE-KNOWN TREE FROM THE WESTERN PERUVIAN AMAZON

AVERRHOIDIUM DALYI IN COCHA CASHU: BOTANICAL MEMORY, SCIENTIFIC VOUCHER, AND A RARE SAPINDACEAE SPECIES IN MANU SCIENTIFIC NOTE AND FIELD TESTIMONY ON A LITTLE-KNOWN TREE FROM THE WESTERN PERUVIAN AMAZON

In the forests of Cocha Cashu, within Manu National Park, every trail holds a scientific story. Since the 1970s, this biological station has become one of the most important places for studying tropical ecology, primates, birds, mammals, forest dynamics, and plant diversity in the Peruvian Amazon.

In that landscape of mature forest, terraces, streams, oxbow lakes, and trails opened for research, Percy Núñez Vargas remembers encountering a singular tree: a tall, straight individual, approximately 30 meters high, close to 1 meter in diameter at breast height, with pale, scaly bark, sterile branches, and twigs with distal serrations. According to his field testimony, the observation would be associated with the Trail 12 North sector, in areas of Amazonian plots established to study tree diversity.

The scientific name linked to this botanical memory is Averrhoidium dalyi Acev.-Rodr. & Ferrucci, a species of the family Sapindaceae formally described in 2002. The original publication indicates that the species is known from the western Amazon, including the Purus River basin in Acre, Brazil, and Manu National Park, in Madre de Dios, Peru.

For this reason, the case must be presented with scientific precision. It is not appropriate to state, without an additional clearly documented voucher, that this is a “new record for Cocha Cashu.” The most rigorous formulation is: a documented record of Averrhoidium dalyi for Cocha Cashu / Manu, supported by the original publication by Acevedo-Rodríguez and Ferrucci and by later catalogues of trees from Madre de Dios; pending detailed review of the label, date, duplicates, and determiner for the specific material associated with R. Foster et al. 9820.

A Rare Tree within Sapindaceae

Averrhoidium Baill. is a small genus in the family Sapindaceae. Current taxonomic sources recognize four accepted species: Averrhoidium dalyi, Averrhoidium gardnerianum, Averrhoidium paraguaiense, and Averrhoidium spondioides. Its general distribution extends from southern Mexico to South America, with presence in countries such as Peru, Brazil, Bolivia, and Paraguay.

Within this genus, Averrhoidium dalyi is especially important for Peruvian botany because it is documented for the western Amazon and linked to Manu National Park. It was described by Pedro Acevedo-Rodríguez and María Silvia Ferrucci, specialists in Sapindaceae.

The species was published in Brittonia, volume 54, number 2, in 2002. The holotype corresponds to the collection D.C. Daly, J. Ramos, L. Lima, F. Walthier & L. Ferreira 7531, from Acre, Brazil, deposited at the United States National Herbarium, Smithsonian Institution. An isotype is also recorded at the New York Botanical Garden.

The Peruvian material is especially relevant because it connects the species with Manu National Park and with Cocha Cashu, one of the most emblematic tropical research sites in Peru.

Cocha Cashu: A Station for Observing the Forest in Detail

Cocha Cashu is located within Manu National Park, in southeastern Peru. Its scientific history is associated with the study of relatively intact tropical forests and with research on primates, birds, mammals, trees, fruits, seeds, and ecological processes.

From its earliest years, the station functioned as a living school for ecologists, botanists, primatologists, ornithologists, and conservationists. There, trails were not simple paths: they were lines of scientific observation. They made it possible to locate trees, repeat censuses, study phenology, collect fallen branches, and relate plants to animals.

Percy Núñez Vargas recalls that since 1973 the area had trails opened by machete, wide enough to allow the movement of researchers and continuous fieldwork. In that scientific tradition, observations of rare or difficult-to-identify trees became opportunities to expand knowledge of the Peruvian flora.

The possible field encounter with Averrhoidium dalyi must be understood within that context: a forest studied for decades, yet still capable of holding species that are uncommon, poorly known, or difficult to recognize without fertile material.

The Challenge of Identifying Sterile Trees

One of the greatest challenges in tropical botany is identifying trees without flowers or fruits. Many Amazonian species can only be confirmed with reproductive material. Leaves, bark, smell, crown architecture, and branch arrangement can help, but they are not always sufficient.

Percy Núñez Vargas describes the tree as a massive individual, from the subcanopy or lower canopy, straight, with pale and scaly bark, sterile branches, and no visible seedlings around it. Under these conditions, a preliminary identification could be confused with other genera of Sapindaceae or with plants from morphologically similar families.

The testimony mentions that at some point a previous identification as Matayba may have been suggested. This confusion is botanically understandable if the material was sterile, because Matayba also belongs to Sapindaceae and may present vegetative characters that make secure field determination difficult.

For this reason, the voucher is indispensable. A fallen branch, a pressed specimen, a complete label, and a well-preserved duplicate allow a specialist, years later, to review the material and assign it the correct name.

Tropical botany is not built only on field intuition. It is built on memory, observation, herbaria, and taxonomic review.

Vouchers: The Material Proof of an Observation

A botanical voucher is the physical evidence that supports an identification. Without a voucher, an observation depends on memory, a notebook, or a photograph. With a voucher, the plant can be reviewed by specialists, compared with types, corrected, sequenced, or incorporated into floristic treatments.

In the case of Averrhoidium dalyi, any scientific statement must be supported by minimum data:

Collection number.
Exact date.
Full name of the collector or collectors.
Precise locality within Cocha Cashu or Manu.
Elevation.
Description of the habitat.
Herbarium where the specimen is preserved.
Existing duplicates.
Responsible determiner.
Relationship with the original publication by Acevedo-Rodríguez and Ferrucci.

At present, the available information makes it possible to confirm that there is a published relationship between Averrhoidium dalyi, Manu, and Cocha Cashu. There is also a later record in the tree catalogue of Madre de Dios based on R. Foster et al. 9820, at 350 m, deposited at MO.

What remains to be reviewed is the complete original label of the Peruvian specimen, its duplicates, the exact date, all collectors, and the responsible determiner.

From “New Record” to “Documented Record”

The expression “new record for Cocha Cashu” must be used with care. If the original 2002 publication already mentions Cocha Cashu Station, then the species was already documented for that site in the scientific literature.

Therefore, it should not be presented as a new record unless there is a different, later, or independent collection that had not previously been published, with its own collection number, date, locality, herbarium, and verifiable determination.

The correct scientific wording would be:

Averrhoidium dalyi is a Sapindaceae species documented for Cocha Cashu / Manu National Park in the original publication by Acevedo-Rodríguez and Ferrucci. The Madre de Dios record later appears in the First Catalogue of Trees of the Amazon of Madre de Dios as R. Foster et al. 9820, at 350 m, deposited at MO. Review of the original voucher, duplicates, and complete label is required to specify the date, collectors, habitat, and determiner of the Peruvian material.”

This precision does not reduce the importance of the finding. On the contrary, it strengthens it. A well-expressed record is more solid than an exaggerated claim.

The Forest as a Classroom of Coevolution

Percy Núñez Vargas’s testimony connects this tree with a broader reflection on plant-animal interactions. At Cocha Cashu, many researchers studied primates, birds, mammals, and seed dispersal. Primatologists, by observing which fruits monkeys consumed, could provide branches, fallen fruits, or plant remains useful to botanists.

This exchange was a form of collaborative science. A primatologist could find a fruit eaten by monkeys; a botanist could identify the plant; an ecologist could relate the consumption to seed dispersal; a taxonomist could review the voucher and confirm the name.

Thus, a rare species such as Averrhoidium dalyi is not merely a name on a list. It can become part of larger questions:

Which animals consume its fruits?
How are its seeds dispersed?
Why are no seedlings observed around the adult described in the testimony?
Is it naturally rare, or simply under-collected?
Does it require special regeneration conditions?
What role does it play in the structure of terra firme forest or floodplain forest?

These questions show that a botanical collection is not the end of the work, but the beginning of new investigations.

Cocha Cashu, Manu, and Madre de Dios

The original publication of Averrhoidium dalyi indicates its relationship with Manu National Park, Madre de Dios, Peru. In addition, the available abstract of the article specifically mentions Cocha Cashu Station. This allows the species to be linked to one of the most relevant scientific sites in the Peruvian Amazon.

However, “Manu National Park” and “Cocha Cashu Station” should not always be used as equivalents. Cocha Cashu is located within Manu, but a locality within the park may refer to different environments: terra firme forest, terraces, floodplain, shores of oxbow lakes, streams, or internal trails.

That precision matters. A rare species may have very specific ecological preferences. Knowing whether it grows in floodplain, terra firme, high terrace, or forest near a trail helps us understand its ecology and conservation.

For this reason, the review of the voucher R. Foster et al. 9820 is fundamental. The original label could contain information about habitat, date, coordinates, collectors, and field observations.

A Species That Requires Herbarium Review

Many rare species appear to be absent until old collections are reviewed. Sometimes specimens remain deposited for years under provisional names, incorrect identifications, or incomplete determinations.

When a monograph or new description appears, those collections gain new value. A specimen previously identified as Matayba or another genus may be reviewed and recognized as Averrhoidium dalyi.

This process is normal in botanical science. Herbaria are not dead archives: they are laboratories of permanent review.

In the case of Cocha Cashu, herbaria such as MO, US, NY, CUZ, USM, MOL, F, DUKE, and other repositories linked to the history of Manu, forest plots, and Amazonian collections should be reviewed.

A complete search should locate all duplicates of the number R. Foster et al. 9820 and any additional collection by Percy Núñez Vargas, Robin Foster, John Terborgh, Alwyn Gentry, Nigel Pitman, or other researchers associated with Averrhoidium dalyi or with previous determinations of Sapindaceae.

The Pending Task for the Flora of Peru

The Peruvian flora remains a work in progress. Although catalogues, floristic treatments, and international databases exist, many Amazonian regions still contain information gaps.

The case of Averrhoidium dalyi shows the importance of completing this work with patience. A species described in 2002 may have been observed or collected years earlier. A sterile tree may wait decades until a fertile branch allows its identity to be confirmed. A provisional determination may change when a specialist review arrives.

Percy Núñez Vargas interprets this process as a difficult, even exhausting task, but one that is necessary for Peruvian science. Collecting, pressing, drying, comparing, reviewing, and publishing are steps along the same path.

Tropical botany advances through great expeditions, but also through small acts: a twig picked up from the ground, a well-written label, an observation of bark, a habitat note, a taxonomic doubt that someone decides not to abandon.

According to his testimony, primate researchers and specialists from other groups could provide fallen branches or plant material associated with their observations. This exchange made it possible to advance in identifications, plant-animal relationships, and floristic records.

The author also highlights the importance of learning from the forest and from those who know it, including Matsigenka knowledge of the rainforest, its trees, fruits, trails, and natural cycles.

He also recognizes the influence of great scientists and collaborators such as John W. Terborgh, Alwyn H. Gentry, Robin B. Foster, Margaret MacFarland, Ann Wilson, Luis Quiñones, Nigel Pitman, Peter H. Raven, John Wurdack, Pedro Acevedo-Rodríguez, and María Silvia Ferrucci.

His main message is that the Peruvian flora is built with great international names, but also with persistent local work: opening trails, collecting, pressing, reviewing, comparing, and keeping field memory alive.

Conserving for the Future

Averrhoidium dalyi represents more than a rare name within Sapindaceae. It represents the kind of species that can go unnoticed for years if strong field botany does not exist.

A sterile tree, without flowers or fruits, may seem like just another individual within the forest. But if someone observes it, describes it, collects it, and preserves a voucher, that tree enters scientific history.

For decades, Cocha Cashu has been a place where the rainforest is studied with patience. There, every trail can reveal an ecological interaction, a little-known species, or a new question for the flora of Peru.

The case of Averrhoidium dalyi should be published with rigor: not as a rushed claim of a new record, but as a documented record that deserves complete review of the voucher, label, duplicates, and determination.

The Peruvian Amazon still holds many answers in its herbaria. Some are in living trees. Others are in branches pressed decades ago.

And each one is waiting to be looked at again.
